Offseason Trades

Image
Even though it is offseason, there is still a lot of baseball going on. Teams are quietly working hard to get ready for the upcoming season. The first step of improvement comes from having the best players. Offseason trades are very prominent in these months, and in this past week, we have seen four big deals already made.  Many teams had their eyes on Japanese star Shohei Ohtani. The talk was non- stop about how valuable he would be on the field, as he can be used as both a starting pitcher and designated hitter. Angels who have struggled several seasons in a row with pitching thought Ohtani would be a great addition to their team. With many offers, Ohtani took the deal with the Angels as he felt it was the right fit. When the deal was signed it was disclosed that he currently has torn a ligament in his elbow. In the long run, this deal may pay off significantly but as of now it looks like Ohtani will not pitch anytime soon, but a DH position may look hopefully for the Japanese

My First Out of State Ballpark Experience!

Image
Hey Guys! So if you know me, you know that I have a bucket list to visit all the MLB stadiums. If you don't me, well now you know that one day I hope to say I've been to 30 ballparks. Up until recently I had been to three of the California stadiums; Angels, Dodgers and the Padres. However I was able to cross my first out of state stadium experience off my list. When the idea of wanting to fulfill this desire came about, I knew that the first stadium I visited out of state had to be Wrigley! So when I say I went to Chicago to see Wrigley, well that was really the main reason. Wrigley Field being my number one priority, I thought that I might as well catch a White Sox game also, because why not knock out two stadiums in one trip. Let me tell you it was extremely hard to find a week when the two both had home games. Of course it wasn't impossible, so the week where they were both at home, was the week I'd be flying out to Chicago with my aunt. I visited Guaranteed Rate

Freeway Series Face-off

Image
By: Kaila Morales  Whether you are an Angels or a Dodgers fan, You know when the two play each other it is a VERY big deal.  The freeway series becomes the fun highlight of the season for the players and fans.  There is this unspoken rivalry between the fans, which makes it more interesting for the players as they know the fans get really into it.  Feeding off this energy makes for some competitive baseball when these two teams meet.  With the Angels being in the American League and Dodgers in the National league this makes for an inter-league matchup.  Wins and losses will affect the team individually, but since the two are from different leagues they aren’t competing against each other in division standings.  So if you consider this fact it does not make the two teams ACTUAL rivals. Instead it comes down to picking sides, you either root for one team or the other.  Angels are placed second in the AL West division with the Dodgers taking first place in the NL W

Memorial Day & Baseball Brawls

Image
By: Kaila Morales  Memorial Day baseball took a turn yesterday when benches were cleared during the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals game.  It has been said that both Bryce Harper and Hunter Strickland have had beef with each other since 2014.  The tension between the two rose when Harper hit two homers off of Strickland during the National League Division Series.  Three years later it looks like the two still have some unfinished business. Harper got a little heated when Strickland’s 98 mph fastball hit him in the hip.  Harper gestured toward Strickland with his bat before charging the mound. He attempted to throw his helmet at Strickland, but it was a failed attempt... miserably.  The two threw a couple punches, and the benches started to clear as everyone raced to the mound. Everyone except for Giants catcher Buster Posey who stood at the plate calm and collectively.  He then proceeded to walk in the opposite direction, avoiding the altercatio

Dodger's Walk-off, A hurt Joc Pederson?

Image
By: Kaila Morales My first story about the Los Angeles Dodgers... Well here it goes!  So the Dodgers had an interesting game last night.  Clayton Kershaw got the start and well no shocker that he was able to pitch the whole 9 innings. I mean who needs closers when you have Kershaw? But just as the game was coming to a close, and Kershaw would have a shutout, that opportunity would be thrown away. A wildpitch in the 9th allowed the St. Louis Cardinals to score and tie up the game at 1-1. The Dodgers got their run early in the 1st, with a solo home-run by Yasmani Grandal.  Ultimately the game went extra innings and the Dodgers were able to grab the win in the 13th. Logan Forsythe hit a walk-off double, in his first game back after coming off the disabled list. Forsythe with a broken toe was assigned to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for his rehabbing assignment. Playing a total of five games with the Quakes. Adrian Gonzalez played along side Forsythe in three of the five. Gon

“Free Baseball coming to an end?”

Image
By: Kaila Morales   We’ve come to know that “free baseball” refers to extra innings.  Extra innings is any playing time that goes after the standard nine innings, which determines the score in a tying-run situation.  Games go however many extra innings needed, until one team scores.  With a few games recorded as the longest game in MLB history at a total of 25 innings. This season so far has had a total of 49 games going to extra innings.  As much as we love to see free baseball, it may come to an end. Talk about doing away with extra innings came about days after the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs battled it out in a six hour, 18 inning game on Sunday night.  The game ended well into Monday morning at 1:14 AM Central time.  Both teams used 42 players combined, with 583 pitches thrown for a total of 128 at bats.  This set the MLB record for strikeouts at 48.  While this makes for an exciting game for the fans, the excitement may not exa

First Doubleheader Sweep as CSUSB Wraps up the Season

Image
By: Kaila Morales Earning their first doubleheader sweep of the season, Cal State San Bernardino baseball goes 3 for 4 against Cal State San Marcos. As CSUSB wraps up their 2017 season with a record of (11-23 in California Collegiate Athletic Association, and 14-32 overall).  This outcome is not what the Coyotes hoped for after holding a record of (17-20 CCAA,  22-29 overall) last season. Coyotes started their four game series against the Cougars on Friday, the opener resulted in a 7-3 loss. All three of the Coyotes runs were scored by Dillon Fahr, with Dominic Campeau accounting for the two RBI’s. “This season has just been disappointing, we had a lot of freshman starting so making the adjustment to such a good conference can be a big adjustment at times,” Martinez said.  Adversities aside CSUSB was able to earn its first doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday, with a score of 14-7 for game 1 and 8-4 for game 2.   With five strikeouts Starter J

Which by the way why isn’t it a national holiday yet?  If you weren’t already aware the New England Patriots are your Super Bowl LI champions!  With a final score of 34-28 in OT. Making history as the first Super Bowl game EVER to go into Overtime.  The Patriots are the first team to reach nine Super Bowls, and now hold the record for the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history after getting their fifth Super Bowl victory tonight.  Whether you’re a Patriots fan or not, you know that everyone refers to Tom Brady as the GOAT which if you didn’t know stands for “greatest of all time” and whether you believe that or not, well tonight's game might have you convinced that he might really be the GOAT.  If you’re still wrapped up in the whole deflategate thing, and think that the patriots are cheaters, or just hate the patriots in general, you can’t help but admit that this game was probably the greatest Supe

A Young Coach Envisioning A We Not Me Team

Image
By: Kaila Morales The Los Angeles Rams welcome new head coach Sean McVay. After going 4-12 this season under head coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher was suddenly fired, after the Rams suffered a blowout loss to the Atlanta Falcons.  As the Los Angeles Rams searched for their new head coach, McVay who was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins for three years stood out.  Rams COO Kevin Demoff says that three priorities had to be met in order to fulfill the position.  They wanted a skilled communicator to reach the players and get them to perform at their best, and to set the tone for the organization.  Someone who was able to play with today’s schemes, and to make sure there is always a competitive edge on the field.  Lastly they wanted their new coach to have an energetic presence, to bring the team to where it needs to be, and to represent the franchise with energy.  “Really from there, once after that first interview we knew we had our guy,” Demoff said.  “Once
